We say: With its 16ft-high ceilings, this has stately-home overtones. But the kitchen is minute (for the staff, perhaps) and the dining room seems rather squashed on to a galleried landing, which could lead to some tricky situations after a few glasses of port. But the panelling and plaster work are wonderful.

We say: There's also a large garden room, which would probably make the upstairs reception room redundant. You might want to countrify the paved garden a little to fit with your rural surroundings – the village has a pub, bakery and regular farmer's market.

We say: For a house of this size, there are not enough bedrooms – though two of the five receptions could be easily become extra bedrooms, leaving the whole of the ground and lower-ground floors as living space. And there's a dumb waiter running between the kitchen and the dining room above.
