Living-room storage – from cabinets and bookcases to audio-visual units and sideboards – is making interiors news this season. After a decade of pieces designed to fade into the background, the latest trend is to use storage to add a touch of colour and glamour to a scheme.
“In the past, people tended to focus on finding shelving units and free-standing furniture that simply met their storage needs rather than something that also enhanced the appeal of the room,” says Simon Meyrick, senior designer at bespoke storage specialists Neville Johnson.
Today, that’s no longer the case: now it’s all about finding storage that makes a style statement in its own right. Take a look around the high street and you’ll find brightly coloured pieces in shades of yellow, purple and lime that are a great way to give your living space the vivid pop of colour that’s so on trend just now.
But you don’t have to go all out – units with multi-coloured door fronts in soft shades of grey and green are right on trend and are a simple way to enliven a neutral scheme. For a more Scandinavian vibe, seek out pieces that combine wood and white finishes and make a more subtle style statement.
The trend for more luxurious touches in our homes is still growing in popularity and metallic fronted storage units are also in evidence, with gold, brass and silver finishes all available.
