Liberty has launched a wallpaper range – but its prints aren’t the only tempting ones. By Trish Lorenz

Liberty launches its first wallpaper collection this week, with a range of three patterns that take inspiration from the retailer’s textile collection. Liberty’s prints are among a swath of new designs to hit the market this autumn, as wallpaper continues to grow in popularity as a decorating tool.

Other launches include Matthew Williamson designs for Osborne & Little, a Kelly Hoppen collaboration with Graham & Brown and a Royal Palaces collection by Cole & Son, which is inspired by architectural features from across British palaces. “We’ve noted a real resurgence in interest in wallpaper over the last few years,” says Kirstie Carey, managing director of Liberty’s Art Fabrics. “And people are being much more creative and innovative in the way they use wallpaper too.”

Trends across the market support Carey’s view, with strong patterns, colourful prints and faux effects all selling well. If you’re thinking of experimenting with wallpaper at home, think beyond the obvious and try lining the inside of cupboards and drawers for a hidden hit of pattern and colour. Or use wallpaper in a large frame to create an oversized artwork on one wall. Faux effects are another interesting application – you can now find wallpapers that resemble wood, brick, feathers and more. If you’re in a more traditional mood try Cole & Son’s Royal Palace collection, which features faux Georgian panelling, friezes and borders.
