Almanack: Unorthodox lunch

HACKS planning to attend this Thursday's lunch given by the Sports Writers' Association of Great Britain should note a possible change of plans. The scheduled guest speaker is Alan Sugar, chairman of Tottenham Hotspur - but next Thursday is Yom Kippur, a Jewish festival that Mr Sugar normally observes. How can this have been overlooked? Almanack telephoned Mr Sugar's man. Much embarrassment. No naming names, but a Jesuit-educated individual in Mr Sugar's employ is going to have a nasty bit of explaining to do when the chairman returns to the office. And journalists who have been looking forward to getting the inside line on Spurs on Thursday should stand by for a letdown.
