Alphand handy in Alps

Luc Alphand broke a 27-year-old jinx when he became the first Frenchman to win a World Cup downhill race in Val d'Isere, France's most famous ski resort, yesterday. Alphand, 30, struggled against a strong Austrian squad in the second leg of the split race. With a combined time of 2min 20.71sec, he beat Roland Assinger by a mere 0.04 sec, while another Austrian, Hannes Trinkl, was third in 2:20.89.
