American Football: Monarchs to play at Spurs

WHITE HART LANE will see another form of football next April when the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football play their home matches there. The Monarchs England's representatives in the revamped six-club league have agreed a three-year deal to use the stadium.

The Monarchs were one of three European clubs who competed alongside seven from North America in the old World League in 1991 and 1992, and were based at Wembley. After a two-year break the league returns in April.

The Monarchs managing director, Dick Regan, who is also vice-president of the World League, said: 'I think our fans will love watching American football there. The proximity of the seats to the field will greatly enhance the atmosphere during games.'

Alan Sugar, the Tottenham chairman, said that the Monarchs' decision to play at White Hart Lane was a recognition of the quality of the refurbished stadium. When completed next year, it will have a video screen and a capacity of around 30,000 for American football.

Sugar said: 'It is a positive development for the club, the fans and the local community. The Monarchs can expect the support of the entire Tottenham organisation.'
