LINFORD CHRISTIE will attempt a sprint double for Britain in this weekend's European Cup in Birmingham, following yesterday's withdrawal of John Regis from the 200 metres. Regis has an Achilles tendon problem, but he will still run in the sprint relay.

Britain's men need to finish in the top two to secure a place in the World Cup at Crystal Palace in September. They are already without Colin Jackson, Tony Jarrett, David Grindley and Curtis Robb through injury, while Rob Denmark, Kevin McKay and David Strang are unavailable.

Irina Privalova, the Olympic 100m bronze medalist, will not be running for Russia in the European Cup. Privalova has achieved the sprint double on the last two occasions the event was held.
