Haile Gebresilasie, of Ethiopia, broke the world 5,000 metres record when he clocked 12min 56.96sec at a meeting in Hengelo, the Netherlands. The world 10,000m champion took the record from Morocco's Said Aouita, who clocked 12:58.39 in Rome on 22 July 1987. The 21-year-old policeman had his sights on Aouita's mark and after a slow start he produced a blistering final lap of 58sec. At Sheffield, Roger Black, the European 400m double champion, made an impressive return in the Guardian British league after being out for a year with a virus by winning the 200m in 21.1sec.
