Three Ethiopian runners who disappeared after last month's World Cross-Country Championships are set to compete in a 5-kilometre race in London this weekend.

Askale Bereda, Bernane Dagne and Getenesh Tamirat have been granted six- month visas by the Home Office while they seek political asylum.

They went into hiding after competing at Durham on 25 March. Bereda finished 25th in the women's race; Dagne and Tamirat were sixth and 18th in the junior women's race.

The trio, who have been staying in south London and training regularly, have entered a 5km road race in Battersea Park on Sunday. They disappeared after their team's appalling journey from Addis Ababa. The runners had to sleep on the floor at Athens airport, and were badly delayed in travelling from London to Durham by bus.
