Athletics: International cross-country, Durham City

Fourteen races are on the card at the County Durham International cross-country meeting on Saturday. The international women's race, together with the men, is a round of the World Cross Challenge Series and provides a wealth of running talent. At the starting line for the 5.2- kilometre race will be the first three women in the Olympic 10,000 metres. Derartu Tulu, from Ethiopia, Elana Meyer, of South Africa, and the American Lynn Jennings, who has won the World cross-country title for the last three years, compete in a rehearsal for the World Championships in Spain in March. Andrea Wallace, from Torbay, and Alison Wyeth, of Parkside, are the best of the British entry. The international men's race is over 8km and the Kenyan James Kariuki defends his title.

How to get there: Police Training Centre playing fields, Aykley Heads, one mile north of Durham City. Admission is free. Good spectating. The children's fun run opens the meeting at 11am. International Cross Challenge, women 1.50pm, men 2.20pm.
