Carlos Monzon, the former world middleweight champion, was killed in a car crash yesterday near his home town of Santa Fe, Argentina. No other vehicle was involved, police said.

Monzon, 52, won the middleweight crown on 7 Nov 1970 with a 12th-round knockout of Nino Benvenuti in Rome and made a record 14 title defences before retiring in August1977.

Of 101 bouts, Monzon won 89 - 61 by knockout - lost three, drew eight and had one no contest. Two of his title defences were against Emile Griffith, winning on a technical knockout in 1971 and a 15-round decision in 1973.

Monzon was convicted in 1988 of killing his estranged lover, Alicia Muniz, during a fight. He was sentenced to 11 years but he was out of prison on a home visit program when the accident occurred.
