Commonwealth Games 2014: Burnett win and ‘Tattie’ victory in bowls have Scotland on top
Alex Marshall had produced one of the most memorable celebrations of the Games
Friday 01 August 2014
Darren Burnett completed a golden day for Scotland as he defeated Canada’s Ryan Bester 21-9 to win the men’s singles. Earlier, Alex Marshall and Paul Foster helped Scotland thrash England in the men’s fours final. The pairs champions teamed up with David Peacock and Neil Speirs to inflict a 16-8 victory.
It was the second final defeat of the day for England after Jamie-Lea Winch and Natalie Melmore lost 20-17 to South Africa in the women’s pairs final.
The fours saw victory confirmed when England conceded ahead of the final end after a single proved insufficient to turn the tide.
England had edged ahead with a four-shot fourth end but it was to prove the highlight for Andrew Knapper, John McGuinness, Stuart Airey and Jamie Chestney as the hosts, inspired by Marshall, secured 10 consecutive points.
Marshall, who emulated sprinter Allan Wells’ Scottish record of four Commonwealth gold medals, had produced one of the most memorable celebrations of the Games after his semi-final victory over England in the pairs but there was a more muted end to this occasion with a team huddle.
The Tranent bowler, nicknamed ‘Tattie’, said: “After last week, I wasn’t going to be doing the same again.
“With being nine shots up with two ends to go, we spoke to the guys on the celebrations, if we managed to win – just shake the guys’ hands and get in the huddle and have a wee celebration. Very shortly.”
England’s earlier final defeat was a lot closer. Melmore and Winch were 7-1 down but turned it round to lead 16-11 before falling behind again.
