STEVE BASTIEN, the Glamorgan fast bowler, made his name with the bat yesterday, hammering a boundary off the final ball to take the Welsh county into the NatWest Trophy quarter-finals in an exciting climax to their rain-delayed second-round tie against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Resuming on 10 without loss chasing 195 to win, Matthew Maynard hit a rapid 60 but Michael Field-Buss (3 for 23) and Chris Cairns (2 for 38) put the brakes on. The target came down to nine off the last over - and Bastien and Steve Watkin, the man of the match, did the business to secure a two-wicket victory.

Warwickshire saw off Sussex by a three-wicket margin at Edgbaston, after making a mountain out of a molehill-sized target of 151 to win. Tony Pigott (3 for 31) and Franklyn Stephenson (2 for 35) reduced the Midlands men to 125 for 6, after Andy Lloyd had hit 40 and the man of the match, Roger Twose, had contributed 38. Neil Smith, with 21 not out, saw them home.

Derbyshire had a disastrous day, crumbling to 103 all out in under 31 overs against Leicestershire at Derby. The Foxes, who meet Durham at Grace Road in the quarter-finals, won by 98 runs. Winston Benjamin, the West Indian fast bowler, did the damage with 5 for 32; while David Millns, the man of the match with his unbeaten knock of 29 on Thursday, took 3 for 29.

David Steele, the former England and Derbyshire batsman who was the man-of-the-match adjudicator, was in no mood to be kind to his former club. 'It seems to me that the main problem was a lack of application,' he said. 'I think they would be advised to spend the afternoon in the nets, but I gather they are going for a game of golf.'
