Chris Broad, the former England player, has been released from his contract by Gloucestershire following a persistent hip injury. Broad still had a year of his contract to run and is seeking legal advice about the decision.

The fast bowler Curtly Ambrose, who has returned to action after a shoulder injury, has been included in the West Indies squad who begin their tour of New Zealand next month.

The South African cricket club, Boland, have been fined 10,000 rand (£1,800) for using a dangerous pitch for their three-day match against the touring New Zealand side. The match was abandoned after one over on the second day after the umpires ruled thatthe pitch had an excessive and unpredictable bounce.
