Craig White has become the latest victim of a jinx that seems to strike down every promising England pace bowler. A visit to a specialist in Sydney revealed that an injury has almost certainly cost him a chance of a place in the second Test. The f ull extent of the problem will not be known until tomorrow.

"I felt a twinge in the side during my last but one over," White said. By the morning, he was in more discomfort and the specialist indicated the possibility of serious muscle damage.
