Cricket: Bowlers do justice to Alleyne's master plan

ENGLAND A gained the upper hand on the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand A. The captain, Mark Alleyne's decision to put the hosts into bat paid dividends as they were bowled out for 155.

At the close, England A were 51 for 2 in reply. Ian Ward, caught at third slip off Warren Wisneski for 10, and Michael Gough, who failed to survive the last ball of the day from Mike Mason after also making 10, were the batsmen out.

Alleyne's team made the most of a damp pitch by taking three wickets before lunch. Alamgir Sheriyar took both of his wickets in the morning session while James Kirtley had Mark Richardson caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Rob Turner for a duck.

The tourists' attack prospered after the break as the dangerous Matthew Sinclair was adjudged lbw to Paul Franks after making 44, then Scott Styris' mistimed hook against the same bowler was pouched by Turner.

The introduction of Chris Schofield resulted in three quick wickets, with Wisneski, Paul Wiseman and Chris Drum making just four runs between them. Gareth Hopkin and Mike Mason added 28 runs in a frustrating last- wicket stand before Hopkin was lbw to Kirtley and England A could be very satisfied with their work.

Turner believes England A are ideally positioned to take a stranglehold: "We know what sort of areas we're trying to get the ball into and what sort of fields we want to set. A few of their players are stroke-makers who like to see the ball going for four and if they're tied down for a few overs they play some rash shots. That's very much part of our game plan."
