Australia win by six runs

(First Edition)

A VALIANT, unbeaten 98 by Hansie Cronje in Lahore yesterday was not enough to prevent South Africa losing by six runs to Australia in the opening match of a triangular one-day tournament.

Cronje, the South African vice- captain, came to the crease after the Australians had broken through early, with the wicket of Gary Kirsten falling to the paceman Damien Fleming in the fourth over. While Cronje kept his end intact, the wickets fell at regular intervals at the other.

Steve Waugh, the joint Australian top scorer with 56 along with his captain, Mark Taylor, won the man of the match award after picking up the important wickets of Darryl Cullinan and Jonty Rhodes.
