Essex yesterday confirmed that Stuart Law, the 28-year-old Australian, would be their overseas player again in 1998.

Mushtaq Ahmed may not be available for Pakistan this winter following his latest injury setback. Somerset's 27-year-old leg-spinner had to pull out of the final county championship game with Glamorgan at Taunton after more problems with his suspect left knee.

Saurav Ganguly inspired India to a seven-wicket victory over Pakistan as they established a 4-0 lead in the five-match Sahara Cup series in Toronto. Pakistan scored 159 for six in 28 overs and India made 162 for three in 25.3 overs as Ganguly hit an unbeaten 75 to follow his two wickets with the ball.
