Cricket: Fleming forces the follow-on: Australia's new fast bowler makes immediate impact as Pakistan struggle

CRAIG McDERMOTT and Damien Fleming, the Australian fast bowlers, shared eight wickets as Pakistan were forced to follow on 261 behind in the second Test in Rawalpindi yesterday.

McDermott captured 4 for 74 and Fleming took 4 for 75 on his Test debut to help dismiss Pakistan for 260 in reply to Australia's first innings of 521 for 9 declared.

Pakistan, who lead 1-0 in the three-Test series, were 28 without loss in their second innings at the close.

Australia missed a chance to press home their advantage when the opener Saeed Anwar had an early escape, Shane Warne spilling a catch at deep square leg.

Pakistan, 48 for 1 overnight, were undone by accurate and hostile bowling to which only Aamir Sohail (80) and Wasim Akram (45 not out) provided resistance.

Aamir Sohail was the only batsman in the first innings to play with confidence, and his innings was eventually ended by Fleming, who had an impressive start to his Test career.

The experienced McDermott, who missed the first Test in Karachi because of a sore toe, returned to lift his career total of Test wickets to 235 in 59 appearances.

When Pakistan resumed in the morning, Aamir Sohail was in such a punishing mood that he hit 13 fours and pulled McDermott for six.

Zahid Fazal, was the first to depart, bowled off the inside edge by Fleming with the total on 90. Aamir Sohail became Fleming's second victim, bowled through the gate.

The captain, Salim Malik, was beginning to look dangerous as he played the pacemen with authority, only to be bowled for 33 by McDermott.

Aamir Malik, playing for his country after a three-year absence, looked shaky and was lbw to McDermott for 11.

The wicketkeeper, Rashid Latif, also lived dangerously for his 18 runs. He was dropped in the slips by the captain, Mark Taylor, but fell to a superb catch by Michael Slater in the covers.

In the very next over, from Warne Inzamam-ul-Haq failed to read a delivery from the leg- spinner and was lbw.

Throughout his nervous stay of 24 minutes, Mushtaq Ahmed could not get off the mark and finally spooned a catch to Warne in the gully from a ball by McDermott.

Waqar Younis held on to score 13 in a 55-run partnership with Wasim before being trapped leg before by McDermott. Wasim played fluently for his 45, which included eight fours. The innings ended when Mohsin Kamal was run out by Steve Waugh.
