Pakistan . . . . .71

West Indies. . .72-1

West Indies win by 9 wickets

PAKISTAN, the world champions, were dismissed by the West Indies for only 71 off 23.4 overs in their World Series Cup match in Brisbane yesterday. Pakistan's total was their worst in their one-day history, beating the 74 they made against England in Adelaide last year. After winnning the toss, only two batsmen reached double figures - wicketkeeper Rashid Latif (22) and pace bowler Wasim Akram (19). The extras total of 12 exceeded the efforts of the remaining nine batsmen.

The chief destroyer was the fast bowler Ian Bishop, who returned his best limited-overs figures of 5 for 25 from 8.4 overs. Curtly Ambrose took 3 for 13 off six overs and the recalled Kenneth Benjamin 2 for 16 off six overs.

Javed Miandad, the Pakistani captain, said: 'We're not batting well. Our batsmen are under pressure. We've been playing cricket with little rest for much of the last year. We've only got 14 players on tour and it's up to those who are here to perform.'

West Indies' Phil Simmons was taken to hospital but later cleared of any skull fracture after a collision with wicketkeeper Junior Murray yesterday. It happened when both players went for a miscued hit by Wasim Akram. Murray had raced about 40 yards from behind the stumps to reach the ball at the same time as Simmons, who had come in from the boundary. Neither player managed to make the catch. Simmons was expected to play in today's match against Australia at the Gabba.
