Cricket: Killeen makes a killing

NEIL KILLEEN bowled Durham nearer to a place in next season's First Division of the County Championship by snapping up five wickets against Leicestershire at Grace Road yesterday. The seamer took 5 for 58 as the home side scored 274 for 7 after the first day's wash-out.

Durham's captain, David Boon, put Leicestershire in and Darren Stevens scored a sparkling 98 with 17 fours before becoming one of Killeen's victims. Durham look certain to clinch a place in the top flight next season if they can pick up nine points from this match.

Leicestershire, hoping to finish in the top three, face a future without the England pace bowler Alan Mullally after he announced his intention to leave the county after 10 years at Grace Road.

Carl Greenidge, the son of the West Indies legend Gordon, helped the champions-elect, Surrey, reduce Yorkshire to 50 for 5 in the 21.1 overs possible at The Oval before rain halted proceedings shortly after 2pm.
