Australia 469-7 dec

South Africa 235-7

PETER KIRSTEN, the South African batsman, yesterday appeared before a disciplinary hearing after questioning leg-before decisions during the third and final Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. Kirsten had exchanged words with the umpire Darrell Hair as South Africa slipped on the third day to 235 for 7 at the close.

The South Africans were chasing Australia's first-innings total of 469 for 7 declared, but as their innings collapsed, there were three leg-before decisions by Hair, involving Andrew Hudson (90), Brian McMillan (2) and David Richardson (6).

Robbie Muzzell, the South African manager, confirmed that Kirsten, who was 52 not out at the close, had appeared before the two umpires, Hair and Terry Prue, and the International Cricket Council referee, Jackie Hendricks. Hansie Cronje, the captain, also attended.

Muzzell said the umpires would consider what action to take over the incident, which occurred as Kirsten stood at the non-striker's end. 'I think you will hear something tomorrow morning,' Muzzell said yesterday, but no details of what Kirsten had said were given.
