THE MOTHER of all one-day cricket battles ended in chaos and confusion here yesterday, writes Tony Cozier in Georgetown, Guyana.

Wasim Akram, the Pakistan captain, bowled the last possible ball with the West Indies needing two runs to tie the scores. As he delivered, an excited crowd was spilling over the boundary and when Ian Bishop stroked the ball towards long-on hundreds were scampering towards the middle with s Bishop and his partner Carl Hooper scampering for the runs which, under the series' regulations, would make the West Indies winners by virtue of losing fewer wickets five to Pakistan's six.

The substitute fielder Zahid Fazal sent his return back to Wasim with Bishop still a few feet out of his ground but, in the melee, Akram dropped the ball and Bishop completed his mission.

Later, however, the International Cricket Council match referee, Raman Subba Row, ruled that the result would stand as a tie because of the peculiar circumstances, leaving the five-match series tied at two wins apiece.
