TWO off-spinners dominated their counties' attacks, something to please Ray Illingworth, and took four wickets apiece. As Derbyshire held out for a draw, Hampshire's Shaun Udal had them in trouble at regular intervals, ending with 4 for 86.

Peter Such, who was England's first-choice spinner against Australia last summer, bowled 47 overs, most of them to Durham's Mark Saxelby. He took 4 for 61 as Essex marched to a 10-wicket win. Saxelby hit the highest score of the day (131) and was ninth out after more than six hours at the crease.

Northamptonshire had Glamorgan in trouble before the weather intervened. Glamorgan, set 301, were 32 for 5 as Curtly Ambrose and Paul Taylor took charge. But a thunderstorm meant that only 13.4 overs were bowled after lunch. They took three more wickets but had to settle for the draw.

When Cambridge University avoided the follow-on against Worcestershire that was that and the draw duly followed.
