Cricket: Round-up - Rose discovers his form to chagrin of Lancashire

FRANKLYN ROSE ensured it was a bad opening day for Lancashire at Wantage Road yesterday. The Northamptonshire fast bowler claimed 5 for 65 to reduce Lancashire to 152 for 8 off the 39.4 overs possible.

Andrew Flintoff (46) offered the only serious resistance before he became one of the West Indian's victims, with Devon Malcolm taking two wickets in successive deliveries.

Rose, who had managed only six wickets at nearly 52 runs apiece in his first three championship games, trapped Nathan Wood lbw and had John Crawley caught at first slip.

Flintoff was caught by Kevin Curran at mid-off before Warren Hegg hooked to Malcolm at long-leg and Glen Chapple was snapped up by Mal Loye.

A fifth-wicket partnership of 200 helped Somerset stage an impressive recovery after they had crashed to 52 for 4 against Warwickshire at Taunton. Ed Giddins and Dougie Brown took two wickets apiece but Simon Ecclestone was six runs short of his century at close, with Marcus Trescothick unbeaten on 84 and the home side much more comfortable on 253 for 5.

Adrian Dale rescued Glamorgan against the bottom side Hampshire at Southampton as Dimitri Mascarenhas and Nixon McLean inflicted heavy damage on the champions.

Michael Powell (52) and Dale (92) provided the one stand of substance when they put on 89 for the fifth wicket in 31 overs, but Dale fell to Mascarenhas, caught behind in one of four catches for Adrian Aymes, before he cleaned up the Glamorgan tail to finish with 4 for 68 while McLean finished with 3 for 42 as Glamorgan were all out for 269. Hampshire lost their opener John Stephenson for nought before bad light and then rain intervened.

The Durham seamer, Melvyn Betts, claimed the wickets of Owais Shah for 47 and the country's leading run-scorer, Justin Langer for 35, just as the duo threatened to lead Middlesex towards greater things at Lord's.

Rain had initially hampered play and the home side lost Richard Kettleborough and Mike Gatting with only 56 on the board.

Betts then claimed Shah, Langer and Keith Brown and the hosts were 175 for 6 when bad light brought an early end.

The former England bowler Mark Ilott took three wickets as Nottinghamshire finished on 288 for 7 against Essex at Ilford.

There was no play at both Chesterfield, where Derbyshire are at home to Gloucestershire, and Headingley with Yorkshire hosting Leicestershire.
