Cricket Round-up: Morris leads the way

GLAMORGAN took full advantage of Kent's enforced contemplation of the dressing-room's pelmet by winning their seventh game in a row to go two points clear at top of the table writes Richard Wetherell.

They breezed past Lancashire by eight wickets with an overwhelming 17 overs to spare. Hugh Morris hit his fifth Sunday League half-century of the season, finishing unbeaten on 87, and Matthew Maynard scored 72. Lacking Neil Fairbrother and Wasim Akram, Lancashire were reliant on Mike Atherton's 64 to get them to 167.

Kent dismissed Sussex for 177, the last six wickets fell for 46 with Nigel Llong taking 4 for 24. There was barely time to digest the cucumber sandwiches before rain finished off the proceedings at Hove after just seven balls of Kent's innings.

There was a soggy end at Edgbaston and some controversy. Warwickshire needed eight off the last over when the umpires took the players off, thus did Middlesex win on a faster scoring rate.

Surrey defeated the rain and Gloucestershire to complete a weekend double and move into third place. Chasing just 156 Surrey were cruising at 110 for 1 when play was interrupted. A revised target of six runs in 12 overs proved as simple as it sounds.

An overdue win, also by nine wickets, came for Yorkshire as openers Martyn Moxon and David Byas put on 165 in 31 overs to give them their first home win for more than a year. Moxon was out for 70 just before surpassing Northamptonshire's 172 but Byas remained on 88 from 102 balls that included one six and 12 fours. Mark Robinson continued his liking for Allan Lamb's men, taking 4 for 23.

Nottinghamshire left Somerset at the bottom of the table as they won by four wickets. Chris Cairns again led the way with 73 off 88 balls.
