Cricket: Scotland give Love new headache

SCOTLAND FELL to another World Cup warm-up defeat yesterday, losing to Yorkshire at Scarborough and leaving their coach, Jim Love, with more problems than solutions.

Greg Blewett's 57, his highest score for the county, was enough to see Yorkshire past the revised requirement of 128 under the Duckworth-Lewis method after rain intervened. Earlier, Gavin Hamilton, playing against his county team-mates, was saved from serious injury by his helmet when he was struck on the side of the head by a beamer from Craig White. After lengthy treatment the all-rounder continued, hitting Scotland's highest score of 44 before being bowled by White as he attempted to slog the former England Test man.

Despite Hamilton's contribution with the bat and a fighting spell from James Brinkley with the ball, Yorkshire cruised to victory in a rain-affected game, reaching 131 for 5 with five balls to spare.

After two previous failures the Scots' opener Bruce Patterson was out for a duck and his potential replacement, Mike Smith, has yet to prove his fitness after a back injury. The spinner Keith Sheridan was only a partial success as a replacement for Nick Dyer, and the seamers bowled too many wides and no-balls.
