Javagal Srinath tore through the South African batting line-up in Ahmedabad on Saturday to spur India to a 64-run victory in the first Test.

The Indian pace bowler, who impressed so much on last summer's tour of England, took a career-best 6 for 21 in just 11.5 overs as the visitors, chasing 170 for victory, collapsed to 105 all out.

Leg-spinner Anil Kumble played a fine supporting role, taking three wickets for 34 runs in 12 overs. On a wearing wicket the visitors were expected to struggle against the Indian spinners but not to such an extent.

FIRST TEST (Ahmedabad; fourth day): India 223 (A A Donald 4-37) and 190 (V V S Laxman 51). South Africa 244 (P S De Villiers 67no; S Joshi 4-43) and 105 (J Srinath 6-21). India win by 64 runs. Second Test: Calcutta, 27 Nov to 1 Dec.
