A crowd of 15,174 made the first competitive day-night match in this country a resounding success at Edgbaston last night, where Warwickshire beat Somerset by 37 runs to move to the top of the Axa Life League.

The home side batted first in the natural light of the early evening, and thanks to 86 by Anurag Singh and 59 from Neil Smith they made 224 for 5.

The Somerset innings began just after 9pm with the Birmingham Test venue bathed in floodlight. Unfortunately for Somerset their batsmen failed to rise to the occasion as they lost wickets steadily, the game ending at 11.38pm when Allan Donald bowled Kevin Shine.
