England A 438; Victoria 30-0

Craig White became involved in an argument on the pitch and immediately lost his wicket for 99 as England A consolidated their strong position with an otherwise disciplined batting display on the second day of their tour match with Victoria.

Resuming on 231 for 4, the tourists were finally dismissed for 438 just after tea after frustrating the Victorian attack for 77 overs with determined, if not attacking, strokeplay.

White, 92 overnight, fell one short of claiming the first century of the tour after edging Damien Fleming to Laurie Harper at slip in the third over of the day. It was a collision with the Victoria paceman, David Saker, as he ran for two to reach 99 which sparked the confrontation as both players squared up to each other. White drove the next ball wildly to fall for 99 for the first time in his career.

"I don't think it distracted me," White insisted. "I got out to a half- volley, which I just didn't play that well. My eyes lit up and I tried to hit it as hard as I could to get my hundred.

"It was there to be hit but it was just a bit of poor technique and I'll blame it on that. I'm not giving him [Saker] the opportunity to say he upset me."

Mark Ealham, who has struggled to make an impact in the early part of the tour, continued England's momentum with a painstaking 78, scored in nearly four hours before he was run out going for a risky single.

Victoria reached 30 without loss at the close, with the opener, Warren Ayres, finishing unbeaten on 13 while his partner, Brad Hodge, was 16 not out.
