Nottinghamshire took advantage of the loan system introduced this season when they signed the seamer Oliver Newby yesterday on a four-week deal from Lancashire. The 20-year-old goes straight into the team for the County Championship First Division match against Kent which starts today.

Newby's deal is for an initial four-week period, but he can be recalled by Lancashire if a first-team spot becomes available. Nottinghamshire, the Championship leaders, are missing Greg Smith, who has a pulled hamstring, Paul Franks with a side injury, A J Harris, who has a broken thumb, as well as Charlie Shreck who is recovering from a back operation.

Lancashire have signed the former Durham batsman Marcus North as a replacement overseas player. The 25-year-old left-hander will join up in mid-July when his fellow Australian Brad Hodge links up with the Australia squad before the Ashes series.

North, who plays for Western Australia and spent last summer with Durham, averages 40 in first-class cricket.

Mickey Arthur has been appointed as the new South Africa coach. Arthur succeeds Ray Jennings, whose brief spell saw a marked improvement in form.
