Alistair Brown hit a world record one-day score of 268 yesterday as records tumbled on an extraordinary day at The Oval. Surrey beat Glamorgan in a fourth-round match in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy in a game which produced a remarkable 867 runs.

Surrey amassed a total of 438 for 5, but Glamorgan came tantalisingly close to winning. When their last man was dismissed with the penultimate ball of their innings, they were just 10 runs short of victory.

Brown, who was assisted by a short 60-yard boundary on one side of the ground and benefited greatly from being dropped in the slips early in his innings, hit 12 sixes and 30 fours in just 160 balls. The former England one-day international's innings surpassed the previous 27-year-old world best for a one-day game, which was set by Graeme Pollock, who hit 222 not out for Eastern Province against Border in East London, South Africa.

The innings by Brown also broke the previous English best of 206 set by Warwickshire's Alvin Kallicharran against Oxfordshire in 1984, which was made in the same competition when it was played over 60 overs.

Brown produced his world-record innings just hours after England named their one-day squad for this summer (in which he was not included), but the Surrey opener was philosophical about the chain of events. "I've had my day today," he said. "I have been playing well and this is the first time we have had a good one-day wicket. It was nice to cash in with a good score.

"They [the England selectors] go with what they want. I had a chance last year and I think they made their decision on two games."

Brown was already fourth on the all-time list of highest scores for his 203 against Hampshire at Guildford in 1997 in the 40-over Norwich Union League. The next best Englishman is Leicestershire's Vince Wells, who hit 201 against Berkshire in the NatWest Trophy in 1996.

Brown's 12 sixes fell just short of the 13 hammered in one innings by Ian Botham for Somerset against Northamptonshire at Wellingborough School in a Sunday League game in 1986.
