Chapple deepens Sussex's one-day malaise

Sussex Sharks appeared to be heading for their eighth defeat of the one-day season after a controlled bowling performance from Lancashire Lightning saw the hosts crumble to 169 all-out at Hove.

Despite 40 from Murray Goodwin and 30 from Matt Prior, Sussex never looked comfortable.

Glen Chapple did the early damage with the ball, taking three wickets inside the first 10 overs, and only Goodwin and Prior made more than 20 as Lancashire set themselves up for a fifth win in Norwich Union Division Two.

Sussex started steadily but their one-day problems, which have left them at the foot of the table, were evident again as opener Richard Montgomerie departed with just 15 scored.

The right-hander had found his form quickly with two boundaries but in the fourth over he edged through to wicketkeeper Jamie Haynes. The Sussex captain, Chris Adams, fared little better and was trapped lbw for 10, leaving the home side on 22 for two.

The Zimbabwean Goodwin attempted to steady his team with a series of measured shots but the impressive Chapple struck again to remove Tony Cottey for a duck. Sussex's problems deepened as Will House was caught off a tame delivery at mid-off.

Goodwin escaped after a Wood delivery caught the outside edge but flew past first slip and down to the boundary rope at third man, and he moved Sussex past the 60-mark by pulling Hogg through midwicket for another four.

Hogg was then unlucky to see Goodwin's square cut fall just short of Haynes, but the young bowler was rewarded moments later when the wicketkeeper reacted brilliantly to take a catch at his feet and dismiss Robin Martin-Jenkins. The wicket left Sussex on 77 for five and with Goodwin closing in on a thoroughly deserved half-century, he was next to go as Hogg and Haynes struck again. Goodwin clearly thought he had missed, the umpire raised his finger.

However, a spirited stand of 44 between Prior and Kevin Innes helped Sussex reach 124 before the latter was bowled by Martin for 15, and the tail added another 45.
