County Championship round-up: Patterson fires Yorkshire as Essex are blown away

Rampant Yorkshire completed their third victory of the season with their first three-day finish since August 2008 as Essex capitulated by an innings and 96 runs at Scarborough, the First Division leaders taking 15 wickets in a little more than 80 overs despite the non-availability of their England duo, Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad.

The home team picked up seven wickets during an extraordinary opening session. After resuming their first innings on 159 for 5 in reply to Yorkshire's 516, Essex lost their last five wickets during the first hour. Steve Patterson, the tall medium-pacer from Hull, claimed Championship-best figures of 5 for 50 as Essex were shot out for 208.

Patterson began by having James Foster lbw for 35, the batsman failing to offer a shot, after which Tino Best had Ryan ten Doeschate lbw for 24. Essex lost their eighth wicket on 192 when Joe Sayers pulled off a brilliant diving catch at cover as David Masters fell to Patterson for 11. Patterson bowled Chris Wright for four and added his fifth wicket when Tim Phillips was caught at cover by Adil Rashid.

As captain Andrew Gale enforced the follow on, Oliver Hannon-Dalby had Billy Godleman caught at third slip by Rashid for one before the prized wicket of Alastair Cook, caught behind for 10, reduced Essex to 28 for 2.

John Maunders was the third batsman dismissed before Richard Pyrah trapped Jaik Mickleburgh lbw and then dismissed Foster, leaving Essex 105 for 5. Mark Pettini (47) and Ten Doeschate (35) did their best to detain the home side but once they had gone the end was fairly swift.

Ian Bell fell short of a century for Warwickshire at Canterbury but his 94 off 183 balls was valuable after Kent had taken a first-innings lead of 127. Bell and Ian Westwood put on 157 for Warwickshire's second wicket before Jonathan Trott (65) helped steer them to a lead of 131 with six wickets left.

Steven Mullaney's maiden Championship century on his first-class debut for Nottinghamshire enabled Chris Read's side to take a slender lead over Hampshire at The Rose Bowl. Jimmy Adams extended a prolific sequence against Nottinghamshire of six 50s in his last seven matches to help Hampshire to a lead of 148 with six wickets in hand.

Left-arm spinner Vikram Bannerjee took a career-best 5 for 74 as Gloucestershire picked up their second win in the Second Division, beating Surrey by 77 runs at The Oval.
