County Championship round-up: Adil Rashid scores career-best 180 for Yorkshire
Wednesday 08 May 2013
Batsman of the day
Confirmation that Adil Rashid's winter of discontent is behind him came in the shape of a career-best 180 as Yorkshire piled on the runs against Somerset at Headingley, the leg-spinning all-rounder sharing second-day stands of 88 with wicketkeeper Andy Hodd, 79 with Rich Pyrah and 55 with Jack Brooks before he was caught behind off Peter Trego, prompting Yorkshire to declare on 505 for 9. Rashid, who last made a century in 2009, said his disagreements with the coach Jason Gillespie and the captain Andrew Gale were "a long time ago" and that he was "in a very good place" and wanted "to contribute to the team's success."
Display of the day
Graham Napier will always be known as a cricketer capable of spectacular deeds, as he has demonstrated with not one but two feats of batting in his career, smashing a Twenty20 world record 16 sixes in an innings in 2008, and equalling the record for sixes in a first-class innings, again with 16, in 2011.
This season Essex have been more than happy with consistent reliability from the all-rounder, now 33. At Old Trafford, he supplemented his unbeaten 102 in the Essex first innings by chipping in with two useful wickets, lifting his tally to 10 so far this season, to have Lancashire in trouble at 115 for 7 before rallying a little to 177 all out.
Escape of the day
Having just denied Worcestershire's Moeen Ali a half-century, Leicestershire seamer Rob Taylor thought he had made another significant breakthrough by dismissing Thilan Samaraweera at New Road when Matt Boyce claimed a catch at short leg with the Sri Lankan on only two. The batsman was given not out, however, because the ball had struck Boyce's helmet first. At the close Samaraweera was unbeaten on 52.
