County Championship round-up: Harmison tears Warwickshire apart in 22 balls

Steve Harmison took seven wickets in an innings – six in the space of 22 deliveries – for the second time in his career as feeble Warwickshire were blown away in 50 minutes at Chester-le-Street yesterday. In the process, Durham clinched their third victory of the season, condemning the Midlands side to a sixth defeat.

Warwickshire crashed from 111 for 3 overnight to 134 all out, losing their last seven wickets for 20 in 46 balls as 31-year-old Harmison finished with 7 for 29, his best figures for the county. His only better analysis is his 7 for 12 for England when West Indies were bowled out for 47 at Sabina Park in Jamaica in March 2004.

Six wickets went down for six runs in a woeful collapse by the relegation favourites Warwickshire, who cannot be happy to have been deprived of key batsmen Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott as well as the all-rounder Chris Woakes because of England Lions fixtures. Coach Ashley Giles' position as an England selector is clearly affording him no favours.

Harmison had 18-year-old Ateeq Javid lbw and, after after Mitch Claydon had knocked out Jim Troughton's off-stump, had his remaining five victims caught at the wicket or in the slips, apart from Boyd Rankin, who was taken by Mark Stoneman at short leg.

Woakes missed out as the Lions took on India A at Leicester following their comfortable win over West Indies A on Tuesday and dismissed the touring side for 254 in 49.3 overs after winning the toss. There were three wickets each for the Yorkshire paceman Ajmal Shazad and for the rather gentler swing bowling of Essex's Ravi Bopara.

Trott was out for 22 and Bell 31 for the Lions, for whom Alastair Cook was rested because of discomfort in the back, handing the captaincy to Yorkshire's Andrew Gale. Bopara scored 41 before he was fifth out at 165, but an unbroken 90-run partnership between Darren Stevens and Peter Trego saw the Lions home with four and a half overs to spare.

Surrey pulled off a 42-run victory over Derbyshire in a gripping finish at Chesterfield in the Second Division of the Championship. From 136 for 1 overnight, needing a county-record fourth-innings score of 408, the home side reached 205 for 1 after Wayne Madsen and Garry Park extended their second-wicket partnership to 160 but then slipped to 284 for 7.

Madsen completed a century – his second in the match – off 209 balls with 10 fours but then came the biggest setback to Derbyshire hopes as left-arm spinner Usman Afzaal had Madsen caught behind and then dismissed the dangerous Chesney Hughes first ball.

Robin Peterson and Tom Lungley revived the chase by adding 53 for the eighth wicket but after Peterson had become a third victim for Andre Nel, Lungley had to retire hurt. He resumed his innings when the ninth wicket fell but ultimately was bowled by Chris Tremlett as Derbyshire were dismissed for 365.
