County Championship round-up: Michael Carberry century helps Hampshire force draw at Worcestershire
Wednesday 11 June 2014
England discard Michael Carberry hit a chanceless century to help Hampshire force a draw at Worcestershire in the Second Division of the County Championship.
Carberry, looking to win back the Test place he lost after England's winter Ashes tour, followed up a first-innings golden duck with a superb 125. Glenn Maxwell hit an excellent 85 as the pair put on 149 for the fourth wicket.
Hampshire finished on 321 for 5 in their second innings having managed just 219 in the first, but Worcestershire (402 for 9 in their first innings) move back above them to the top of the table.
Apart from being top of the Second Division, Worcestershire possess this season's leading County Championship run-scorer and wicket-taker in their ranks.
Carberry hit 21 fours and a six in his 249-ball, near five-hour stay at the crease, getting his second Championship century of the summer. But he was actually outscored in his partnership with Maxwell, who hit two sixes off Saeed Ajmal in his 85, at almost a run a ball.
At Edgbaston Lancashire's Jos Buttler did little to advance his claims for an England Test place as he added just 22 runs to his first-innings duck in the First Division game against Warwickshire. However, Steven Croft scored an unbeaten century as Lancashire gave Warwickshire a scare in the final session.
At 103 for 4 and only 67 ahead, the visitors needed a sizeable innings from someone and Croft (104 not out) provided it, hitting 10 boundaries as Lancashire declared at 322 for 7. Croft then claimed 3 for 25 as Warwickshire slumped to 86 for 5, but Lancashire ran out of time and the game was drawn.
Somerset have signed South Africa batsman Colin Ingram to replace Alviro Petersen while he is away on international duty with the Proteas.
