County Championship round-up: Ollie Rayner's haul leaves hapless Surrey staring into the abyss
Wednesday 04 September 2013
Ollie Rayner's career-best figures of 8 for 46 accelerated Middlesex towards a victory over Surrey at The Kia Oval which would push their London rivals deeper into the County Championship First Division relegation mire.
Surrey fell to 145 all out in their first innings as off-spinner Rayner sliced through them in a remarkable afternoon session which they began looking reasonably secure at 59 for 1 in reply to Middlesex's first innings of 294.
By the close Surrey were 282 runs adrift as Middlesex reached 133 for 5 in their second innings, with Dawid Malan finishing unbeaten on 28 and not even Gary Keedy's 5 for 42 was enough to bring Surrey back into the game.
Samit Patel's third County Championship century of the season revived Nottinghamshire's fortunes as they reached 359 all out – a first-innings lead of 61 against Warwickshire, who closed the second day on 27 for 2.
The all-rounder, overlooked by England in all three formats this summer, passed 1,000 first-class runs for the campaign before being dismissed by Darren Maddy, edging to slip, via a huge deflection from the wicketkeeper's gloves.
