County round-up: Veteran Vaas rolls back the years with 30th five-wicket haul

Chaminda Vaas is 37 and retired from Test cricket two years ago but on his and the current Sri Lankan team's form, he could claim back his place without a second selectorial thought.

Northamptonshire's veteran left-arm swing bowler claimed the 30th five-wicket haul of his career in just 30 deliveries as Glamorgan crashed spectacularly at Wantage Road.

Replying to the Second Division leaders' 461 for 6 declared, Glamorgan were all out for 72 in 29 overs. Vaas, who has 32 wickets in all cricket this summer, with 24 in the Championship, took his first three in eight balls without conceding a run.

Glamorgan lost their first seven wickets for 24 runs in the space of 53 balls but astonishingly it was not the biggest collapse of the day. That came at New Road, where Worcestershire, seeking to avoid a seventh defeat in seven matches, lost their last seven for 20 in 48 deliveries.

At 223 for 3, they were level with Nottinghamshire. But then Alexei Kervezee and Moeen Ali were out without a run added and everything fell apart. Notts' pace bowler Charlie Shreck claimed four wickets in his last 16 balls for his first five-wicket haul for three years, but then Notts lost their first five second-innings wickets for 61.

Yorkshire's 273 at Hove, where seamer Steve Patterson hit a career-best 53, looked sound by comparison but inadequate next to Sussex's 548 for 4 declared and they followed on, 275 behind and facing a third straight defeat.
