County round-up: Yorkshire lose Sidebottom with a side strain
Monday 26 May 2014
Bowler of the day
Yorkshire lost Ryan Sidebottom with a side strain but their remaining seamers manfully shouldered the extra workload in the rain-affected Roses match at Headingley, restricting Lancashire to 325 after Jack Brooks led the way with 5 for 90. The former Northamptonshire seamer has become a formidable weapon for Yorkshire on their home patch, where he has taken 20 of his 26 Championship wickets so far this season.
Having dismissed Paul Horton for 66 as the first wicket to fall in the morning session when the Lancashire opener was bowled offering no stroke, Brooks had Alex Davies caught at second slip in the fifth over after lunch and struck twice with the second new ball, most importantly ending the threat posed by the in-form all-rounder Tom Smith, bowled for 54 when he chopped on to his stumps trying to cut.
Batsman of the day
Fast bowler Jamie Overton capped Somerset’s day at Edgbaston with a maiden half-century in his 22nd first-class match, the 20-year-old sharing a last-wicket partnership of 69 with his twin brother Craig to take their side’s total beyond 400 after Nick Compton and James Hildreth were dismissed in the nineties, both caught behind by 19-year-old Pete McKay, who took over as keeper when Tim Ambrose had a calf strain.
