Cricket round-up: Stanford side named for big money match

Stanford Superstars – the team who take on England for a £10m Twenty20 purse – have named their squad for the 1 November contest.

West Indies great Sir Viv Richards, chairman of the Stanford selectors, named a combination of established names and unknowns in a 17-man party.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Daren Powell and Jerome Taylor are among the household names picked for the match in Antigua.

"We believe this squad is very capable of doing justice to their selection to the Stanford Superstars squad to face England for the unprecedented purse," Richards said. "There are several familiar faces in this Stanford Superstars squad but there are some exciting new additions such as Lindon James, Lionel Baker and Chad Hampson."

On the domestic front, Durham's County Championship match with their title rivals Nottinghamshire may make unwanted history today as only the second four-day washout at The Riverside.

Championship matches being abandoned without a single ball bowled are a rare beast in the era of covered pitches – and the only previous instance at one of English cricket's newest first-class venues occurred in 1997.

After day three was confirmed as another washout by early afternoon, the options open to the top two teams in the First Division One are a one-innings match or an attempt to salvage bonus points – should any play eventually be possible.

Third-placed Somerset finished the day firmly in command after Marcus Trescothick, who hit 158, and Zander de Bruyn, who scored 109, both recorded centuries as the home side declared on 401 for 3 against Surrey at Taunton.

Surrey, at the bottom of the division, made a poor start in reply with Scott Newman falling lbw to Andy Caddick for a duck, but Mark Ramprakash and Stewart Walters batted out to reach 47 for 1 at the close.

Yorkshire moved into a three-run lead over Lancashire thanks to the efforts of Anthony McGrath and Andrew Gale in the Roses match at Old Trafford. The pair shared a stand of 215 before McGrath was out on 99. Gale, though, reached his century and finished on 111 not out, including 12 boundaries, as Yorkshire closed on 234 for 2.
