Graham Thorpe is very doubtful for the first Test against Australia after being ruled out of Surrey's County Championship home match with Lancashire today because of persisent calf trouble.
The left-hander, who injured himself in the warm-up to the first one-day triangular series match against Pakistan, is in fine form and would be a serious loss for next Thursday's Test at Edgbaston. He made crucial contributions to victories in Karachi and Colombo last winter and followed on this season with 80 in the Lord's Test victory over Pakistan and a century in the second Test.
Extensive treatment has failed to ease the problem, leaving Thorpe with little preparation even if he recovered in the next seven days. When the England selectors name their squad tomorrow, one option would be to give Thorpe time to prove his fitness and to name an extra batsman in the party.Reuse content
