'It didn't hit me until I was out'

A lord's century "did not dawn" on England's Marcus Trescothick until he was back in the pavilion to watch the last moments of England's dramatic two-run defeat by Pakistan in the NatWest series.

"It wasn't actually until I came off that I realised I had scored a hundred at Lord's. It was quite an amazing thing from a personal point of view. It didn't really dawn on me until I was out," Trescothick said.

"I didn't make a big issue of it while I was batting but it's nice to get my first one-day hundred out of the way.

"It just went the wrong way at the end of the day. It can happen like that and obviously we're disappointed. It makes our chances of qualifying for the final very slim," he added.

"At one stage we almost lost the game in the first 15 overs. Then myself and Owais [Shah] put on that partnership and almost sealed a win. We just had to finish it off but sadly we fell at the last hurdle.

"After three wickets for not many it was always going to be tough but it's a little bit of experience that was missing. We just need somebody to come in at that stage and finish it off and stay with the dominant partner.

"Owais played magnificently. From the moment he came in he just seemed to settle into the role and take control of the situation. He really didn't look like he was only playing his second game."

Waqar Younis, Pakistan's captain, said: "It was a great game of cricket. Both teams played really well, especially Trescothick, a magnificent innings. I was very happy with the run-outs, the fielding, it was magic. In the last over, Saqlain [Mushtaq] kept his nerve and got Trescothick's wicket which was vital. It was a great catch by Shahid Afridi, it gave us the game."
