Top bowling by paceman Michael Kasprowicz and leg-spinner Shane Warne have put Australia in a commanding position after the second day of the first Test against Pakistan in Perth.

Kasprowicz, who only got the nod ahead of Brett Lee at the 11th hour, took five for 30 as Pakistan were all out for 179 in 77.3 overs.

Warne ended the day with figures of three for 38 as the tourists finished two runs short of avoiding the follow-on.

But, as is the practice now by Australia captain Ricky Ponting, Pakistan were not made to bat again and the home side were 15 without loss - a lead of 217 - at stumps.

Earlier in the day Justin Langer missed out on a double century after he was last man out slogging in an attempt to reach the landmark.

Resuming on 357 for eight, Kasprowicz departed quickly for four, and faced with batting with number 11 Glenn McGrath, Langer adopted an aggressive approach and was caught for 191 after skying Mohammad Sami to Younis Khan.

In reply to their host's 381 Pakistan, who have not beaten Australia in a Test since December 1995, crumbled and only a fifth wicket stand of 48 between Younis (42) and Abdul Razzaq (21) saved face.

Mohammad Sami (29) and Shoaib (27) also showed resistance in a 60-run partnership for the ninth wicket but losing six wickets for 60 runs in the afternoon session proved to be Pakistan's downfall as Kasprowicz and Warne reaped the rewards of some fine bowling.

Australia faced three overs with Hayden seven not out and Langer three not out at the close.
