Kent gave themselves an excellent chance of winning by dismissing the visitors for only 155, but then slumped to 97 for six. The final four wickets were claimed quickly for the addition of just 22 runs. Most credit must go to Sussex's two Pakistani bowlers Mushtaq Ahmed and Naved-ul-Hasan, who shared eight second-innings wickets.
Kent needed 89 to win yesterday, but the two bowlers took just 8.2 overs between them to end the match.
Min Patel (two) was the first to go, putting Naved into the hands of long leg and Kent were 102 for seven. Three runs later captain Chris Adams showed quick reactions at silly mid-off to hold Niall O'Brien (10) off Mushtaq, who then beat Simon Cook with his leg spin to have him lbw. The last pair then added nine runs before Naved took a return catch from Amjad Khan (eight) to finish with four for 28 from 12.2 overs and it was all over in just half an hour.
l Lancashire have signed the Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds to replace Muttiah Muralitharan, who is on international duty. The 30-year-old Symonds will be available immediately, having helped Australia defeat England 2-1 in the NatWest Challenge one-day series.
