England's batting frailty was exposed as India took a 4-0 lead in the five-match one-day series here. The tourists wasted an opening stand of 89 between Arran Thompson and Caroline Atkins, with Laura Newton the only other player to reach double figures.

England had no answer to the spinner Neeta David, who took 4 for 15, despite Thompson enhancing her reputation by scoring 58. India were reduced to 49 for 3, but the captain, Anjum Chopra, made an unbeaten 49 to see her side home with more than eight overs to spare.

Lucy Pearson took 2 for 24, but her new ball partner, Newton, gave up 23 from four overs.

The tourists were in an upbeat mood after their improved performance in the Test and Thompson and Atkins gave them further grounds for optimism. Mandie Godliman, Jackie Hawker and Clare Connor all went cheaply, though, but the crucial wicket was that of Thompson, who was run out.

Newton's dismissal sparked a collapse which saw the last four wickets fall for one run.
