Rashid turns match away from Surrey
Yorkshire 594-9 dec
Surrey 237-5
Yorkshire began the day breaking records and ended it breaking Surrey hearts as Adil Rashid destroyed the home team's upper order with a devastating spell of leg-spin bowling. Despite a sound 100 by Scott Newman and a fine innings from Mark Ramprakash, Surrey found themselves five wickets down by the close, still 208 runs short of the 445 required to avoid the follow-on.
While Newman and Ramprakash were together compiling 196 for the second wicket, the Brown Hats looked as if they were going to make light work of Yorkshire's imposing first-innings total. Despite the early loss of Jonathan Batty, Surrey were not intimidated. Newman scored his first 50 at exactly a run a ball, then took a further 84 deliveries to reach three figures for the 11th time in his career. Ramprakash was his customary self, a model of patience and precision as he moved imperiously to 50.
But with 25 minutes remaining to stumps, Newman drove Rashid tamely to Jason Gillespie and that sparked a shattering spell which saw Surrey lose four wickets in 15 balls.
James Benning followed Newman, leg before to Rashid, nightwatchman Nayan Doshi was stumped and Alistair Brown snapped up at slip. But Ramprakash, who by then had been joined by acting captain Rikki Clarke, was still there within touching distance of three figures. Earlier in the day, the home attack had toiled from the start. The Surrey spinners Doshi and Chris Schofield became reluctant centurions - conceding more than 100 runs each - and the fielders involuntary spectators as the ninth-wicket pair of Tim Bresnan and Jason Gillespie put on a record stand of 246.
Both reached their maiden Championship 100s just after lunch and by the time Bresnan was stumped they had smashed the 109-year-old mark for Yorkshire set by George Hirst and Schofield Haigh. It was the third highest ninth-wicket partnership in England and the fifth highest in the world as they took Yorkshire to their second-highest total against Surrey.
