Gloucestershire teenager David Payne took four wickets in as many balls but it was not enough to stop his side from suffering a 42-run defeat to Essex in their Clydesdale Bank 40 match at Chelmsford.

Payne, 19, finished with the impressive figures of seven for 29 from six overs, mainly thanks a frantic final over when five wickets fell –the last was a run out. That over was the culmination of a stunning Essex collapse that saw them lose their final seven wickets for just 22 runs after veteran Grant Flower (116) and Ryan ten Doeschate (84) had put on 166 for the fourth wicket.

In reply William Porterfield hit 65 but Gloucestershire never really threatened the target as they were bowled out for 225 from 37.3 overs.

Yorkshire are still yet to lose in any competition this season after thrashing Derbyshire by 100 runs at Headingley. Wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy hit an unbeaten 93 from 70 balls in the hosts' 241 for four before Steven Patterson (6 for 32) tore into Derbyshire as they managed 141 all out.

Sussex ensured a third successive win to start the competition after beating Lancashire by 39 runs at Hove. Andy Hodd hit 91 in the Sharks' 245 for seven and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan's three for 37 restricted the visitors to 206 for nine.

Durham suffered their first 40-over defeat after Jonathan Trott hit a century to lead Warwickshire to a seven-wicket win at Edgbaston. Trott hit 103 from 98 balls.
