Round-up: Bresnan boosts case for Test call-up

As Stuart Broad struggled to recapture his form at Trent Bridge, Tim Bresnan seized his chance to get among the wickets for Yorkshire against Worcestershire at Scarborough, finishing with 4 for 68 to enhance his prospects of getting the nod for the opening Test against India a week on Thursday. Worcestershire were dismissed for 168, with former England pace bowler Ryan Sidebottom taking three for 40, but James Whitaker, the selector in attendance, will have noted that Bresnan's bowling was a mixed bag at times.

He removed Daryl Mitchell via a catch at first slip in his first spell, during a torrid morning for Worcestershire which saw them slide to 59-6. Ajmal Shahzad was as impressive as Bresnan and Rich Pyrah would have added to his two wickets but for a couple of dropped catches.

Yet in a bizarrely wayward spell just after lunch Bresnan and Sidebottom somehow conspired to give away 43 runs in three overs as Gareth Andrew and Ben Scott fashioned a recovery for Worcestershire. Bresnan recovered his poise, however, to have Andrew caught at third slip and boosted his analysis by taking wickets with the two final balls of the Worcestershire innings. Yorkshire finished unsteadily on 135-5, although Andrew Gale, one of several Yorkshire batsmen struggling for runs this season, is unbeaten on 68.

Meanwhile, England's forgotten spin bowler, Monty Panesar, demonstrated his continuing upward progress for Sussex at Hove, finishing with four for 71 from 33 overs as Hampshire were bowled out for 206.

Hampshire's disappointing season goes on. It was only through a couple of sixes from the lusty bat of Dominic Cork that they squeezed a solitary batting point after winning the toss.
