Round-up: Durham's old stager returns to century duty shows appetite still burns bright with century

Paul Collingwood answered any doubts over his appetite for county cricket as he marked his return to the Championship with a century against Yorkshire yesterday.

Since his last Championship appearance, in July last year, the Durham all-rounder has announced his retirement from Test cricket, been deposed as England's Twenty20 captain, undergone a knee operation and turned 35, all of which have been cited as reasons to suppose he might find it hard to motivate himself.

He might take that view himself if he cannot force himself back into England's limited-overs plans – and his Twenty20 form so far has been modest – but for the moment ambition still burns and his first Championship hundred since 2005 helped the First Division leaders into a strong position.

Collingwood was out for 108 and, with a 70 from Phil Mustard and half-centuries from Gordon Muchall and Scott Borthwick, Durham declared with a lead of 223.

Champions Nottinghamshire posted a familiar scorecard against Lancashire at Trent Bridge, slipping to 138-6 after opting to bat first before captain Chris Read and all-rounder Paul Franks put on 135 for the seventh wicket on a pitch of uneven bounce.
